Over the past 30 years, the 65-plus age group has grown by 58 percent, and the population of those aged 85 and older has increased by 163 percent, according to U.S. Census Bureau estimates. Within a couple of decades, older people are expected to outnumber children for the …rst time in our nation's history — 78.0 million seniors compared to 76.7 million people under 18 years old by 2035. And, in 2050, more than 1 in 5 Americans will be 65 years old or older.
